Making Sense of What Comes with a Universal Audio Apollo

I’ve been eyeing a Universal Audio Apollo interface for a while now. The hardware sells itself — the preamps, the real-time processing, the build quality. But every time I’ve gone to actually pull the trigger, I’ve ended up down a rabbit hole of plugin lists, bundle names, and acronyms that all blur into one.

The two tiers that kept tripping me up were the ESS (Essentials) and STU (Studio) plugin collections. Both are bundled with various Apollo models, and UA’s own pages aren’t exactly the easiest thing to cross-reference when you’re trying to work out exactly what you’d be getting — and what you’d be missing.

So I put together a comparison table that lays both collections out side by side, with individual plugin prices pulled from UA’s standard RRP. That way, you can see not just which plugins are in each tier, but what the actual monetary difference works out to.

The short version: ESS gets you 32 solid workhorse plugins with a combined value of around $1,759. STU steps that up to 59 plugins worth approximately $3,608 — a difference of roughly $1,849 in extra value, mostly driven by a full instruments category (Moog Minimoog, Ravel Grand Piano, Waterfall B3, and more) that ESS doesn’t include at all, plus deeper compressor coverage with the dbx 160, Distressor, LA-3A, and the full Fairchild and 1176 collections.

Whether that gap justifies the price difference between Apollo models depends entirely on your workflow. If you’re primarily tracking and mixing without needing virtual instruments or tape machine emulations, ESS covers a lot of ground. If instruments, advanced pitch correction, and the full classic compressor suite matter to you, STU earns its keep quickly.

Either way, hopefully the table saves you the hour of tab-switching I had to do to figure this out.

This is really a reference tool for me until such time as I do buy… but if you think it can be improved, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do.
