Odeon Limitless – is it a Good Deal?

by | Mar 2, 2016 | Film | 0 comments

Odeon Limitless is here, yes Odeon has finally joined the likes of Cineworld – who have previously offered an all-you-can-eat cinema. As the name suggests you can view as many films as you want every month for a fairly reasonable 17.99 per month (outside Central London) and 19.99 per month if you want to view them in Central London.

The first thing I thought is; That’s how much it cost me to buy one ticket last time I went, so really this is fantastic value, even if you only use it once a month. But that was immediately clouded by the second though; This is too good to be true. But is it?

TL;DR —– 2022 Update

This is a May 2022 update, and I thought I would share what I know as a Limitless member. Due to the covid lockdowns, cinemas have been hit pretty hard, so Odeon reduced Limitless to try and get people back to the cinema. It has been £12.99 for a while but crept back up to £14.99 recently (still better than the old £17.99 price tag). Also be aware that ticket prices differ all over the UK, so Limitless value will be based on how often you will go and how much tickets cost you.

If I were to book an adult ticket in a standard IMAX seat for Fantastic Beasts: The secrets of Dumbledore, it would cost £17.50! Yes. Welcome to 2022. If I use Limitless, the IMAX upgrade price would be £5. This basically means you get the standard £12.50 ticket price for free and pay the IMAX difference. Now, for a premier seat (more legroom, wider, marginally better than standard seats), you will pay £19.50 for an IMAX showing of the same film. So we can determine that a premier seat upgrade is £2. Therefore with my Limitless, I will pay £7 to see an IMAX film in Premier seats.

If I look ahead to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there is an additional cost for a new film that they KNOW people want to see. It looks to be £1 extra, though there doesn’t seem to be the additional £1 for Limitless which is nice. The same or similar fee showed up on Spider-Man and The Batman and usually disappears after the first week or so.

—– TL;DR Over —–

Alas, this is ONLY for your basic 2D screenings – 3D and IMAX are not covered. Well they might be… the T’s and C’s simply mention “upgrades” but don’t really say how much it will cost, so it obviously could range from £1 extra to a penny off full price and be classed as an upgrade. I would GUESS it would be similar to Orange Wednesdays Meerkat Movies and you may the price of the ticket over and above the price of a normal ticket. But that is a guess as it just doesn’t say AT ALL. It says:

10.4.   Tickets types included in your membership package. Unless expressly stated otherwise in your membership package, your membership will only entitle you to book a standard ticket for a standard format public 2D film screening with a standard seat type in a standard auditorium. Your membership package may exclude or require an upgrade fee to book tickets for other types of screening, format, auditorium and/or seat.

Ticket types available with upgrade feeMembership can be used with an upgrade fee for these ticket types: 3D, IMAX, iSense, The Gallery, D-Box, and Premier seating.

I have been waiting for something like this for ages, and I think with the prevalence of 3D films, Odeon Limitless seems to fall a bit flat. The last few films I’ve seen have been IMAX, Star Wars, Deadpool, etc. Yes there are AMAZING 2D films released every year, but why don’t they have a price bracket that includes IMAX or at minimum 3D screenings. My nearest Odeon (Uxbridge) has an IMAX screen (ignoring if it is “real” IMAX or not for the moment) and it has become my preference if it is available. It drowns out the people making out in the back and intact the people snoring next to you, while watching a Michael Bay masterpiece in Transformers. Basically they should have other tiers not jest Central London and not Central London.

There should be a 3D for £19.99 a month or IMAX for £29.99 month. But if they aren’t going to do that then the least they could do is publicise how much it’s going to be to UPGRADE your bog-standard Odeon Limitless tickets! Ah well… Rant over.

I’ve included the full terms and conditions for Odeon Limitless below. I’ll Highlight certain bit’s such as upgrades.

6.1.  Your membership package.  On the last page of these Terms, you can find details of the various membership packages we offer, including the minimum membership period, and the cinemas / tickets included in the package. You will be asked to select a membership package during the joining process, and your welcome email will confirm which package you selected.

6.2.  You join for a minimum membership period. When you join, you commit to a minimum period of membership. Your membership will continue for at least the minimum period set out in your membership package, unless you or we terminate it earlier in one of the ways set out in these Terms.

6.3.  Your membership starts straightaway. Your membership starts from when we inform you that you have completed the joining process. We will email you a temporary digital membership card that you can use straightaway until your permanent membership card arrives.

6.4.  What happens after the minimum membership period. At the end of the minimum period, if you joined with monthly payments, your membership will continue automatically until you or we end it in one of the ways set out in these Terms.  If you joined with one upfront payment, your membership will terminate automatically at the end of the minimum period, unless you chose to extend it.  The paragraphs below on fees and payments contain more information about this.

6.5.  Your membership package choice is fixed. You cannot change to another membership package during your minimum membership period.

You can’t use more than one Limitless membership in a Limitless ticket booking.

Only you, the person named in the joining process, can benefit from your membership package and these Terms.  You may not use your membership to obtain tickets or other benefits for anyone else. You may not sell or make any commercial use of tickets or other benefits obtained using your membership, and any attempt to do so will invalidate the relevant tickets or benefits.

6.10.   Be good please! You agree to use your membership in an honest way, and to refrain from use which is dishonest or fraudulent.

7.      YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEES

7.1.  Your membership fee.  The membership fee for your membership package will be as indicated in the joining process. The membership fee stated includes VAT. The membership fee will vary according to the payment method you select, as indicated in the joining process.

7.2.  You must pay membership fees for the minimum membership period. You must pay us the membership fees for your membership package for the whole of your minimum period. No refund will be given for membership fees for your minimum period, unless your membership terminates within the minimum period in one of the ways set out in these Terms and you are entitled to a refund.

8.      HOW AND WHEN WE MAY INCREASE YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEES

8.1.     Membership fee increases during the minimum membership period. We won’t increase the membership fee you pay for your membership package during your minimum period, with one exception which relates to increases in VAT.  If you are paying monthly and an increase in VAT comes into force before your minimum period ends, we can increase your monthly membership fee to pass on the increase in VAT.

8.2.     Membership fee increases after the minimum membership period. We can increase the membership fee for your membership package after your minimum period ends for any of the following reasons:

8.2.1.    If our ticket prices have increased. Where this applies, we will increase the price by a reasonable amount to reflect the increase in ticket prices;

8.2.2.    Where our costs have changed, or we have a good reason to expect them to change soon. This includes where there is a change in the law or regulation which increases our costs. If this applies and we are making a change, we will change the price in a way that reasonably reflects the way our costs have changed. We will make a reasonable effort to work out how our costs have changed per member;

8.2.3.    Where taxes and duties imposed on us have been changed (or new ones introduced). In this case we will not increase the price by more than the amount of the tax, where we can work this out;

8.2.4.    If we have added new features or otherwise improved your Limitless membership package.

8.3.     Telling you about membership fee increases. We will send you a written notice telling you about any increase in membership fees which affects you at least 60 days before the change comes into effect.

8.4.     Your rights if you are not happy with a membership fee increase.  If you are not happy with the increased membership fee, you can terminate your Limitless membership by calling the Limitless customer service number, and we will give you a refund of any membership fees you have already paid in advance which relate to the period after the date of termination. If you do not do this before the change comes into effect, then we will assume that you have agreed to the change.

9.      YOUR PAYMENTS

9.1.     Payment options. In the joining process, you can choose to pay monthly or upfront.

9.2.     Monthly payment option.  If you chose to pay monthly, here’s how it works:

9.2.1.    Monthly payments. You pay each monthly membership fee at the start of the month.  Your first month starts on the day you join;

9.2.2.    Payment method. The first monthly membership fee is payable by credit or debit card, which enables your membership to start straightaway, and you will also be required to set up a direct debit for the subsequent monthly membership fees;

9.2.3.    Direct debit. You must be the account holder of the account from which the direct debit is to be taken. Your direct debit date will be the same day of the month as the day you joined. We will confirm your direct debit date and amount to you by email after you have completed the joining process;

9.2.4.    Obligation to maintain your direct debit. You must maintain a direct debit instruction with your bank for the monthly membership fee throughout your minimum membership period, unless your membership terminates within the minimum period in one of the ways set out in these Terms;

9.2.5.    Change of bank account.  If you want to change the bank account for your direct debit, you should call the Limitless customer service number and you must give us at least 30 days’ notice;

9.2.6.    Failed direct debit payment charges. If any direct debit payment due from you is returned unpaid, you will pay on demand a reasonable administration fee (currently £9.99) which is payable to our direct debit payment services provider, Harlands Services Limited;

9.2.7.    At the end of the minimum membership period, membership continues. When your minimum period comes to the end, your membership will automatically continue unless you have terminated it in accordance with these Terms. If your membership continues, you agree that we will collect monthly membership fees at the then current rate until you terminate your membership. If the monthly membership fee for your package has increased, we will write to you at least 60 days prior to increasing your membership fee.

9.3.     Upfront payment option. If you chose the upfront payment, here’s how it works:

9.3.1.    One upfront payment. You pay the membership fees for the whole of the minimum membership period on the day you join;

9.3.2.    Payment method. The upfront membership fee is payable by credit or debit card;

9.3.3.    At the end of the minimum membership period, membership terminates unless you extend. When your minimum period comes to the end, your membership will automatically terminate, unless you chose to join again.

9.4.     Harlands Services Limited / snapdda.co.uk. Depending on your payment method, your payments may be collected and administered on our behalf by our payment services provider Harlands Services Limited. In this case, the name “Harland Services Limited” and/or “www.snapdda.co.uk” may appear on your bank or card statement next to your membership fee payments.

10.    YOUR TICKETS

10.1.   List of ODEON Cinemas. An up to date list of ODEON cinemas in the UK can be found at ODEON.co.uk.

10.2.   Cinemas included in your membership package. Your membership package may exclude some ODEON cinemas or require that you pay an upgrade fee to book tickets at some ODEON cinemas. BFI IMAX and The Lounge at Whiteleys are not included in any of our packages.

10.3.   Changes to list of ODEON cinemas during your membership. The number, location and opening hours of ODEON cinemas may change during your membership.  Please note the following:

10.3.1.  Temporary changes. During your membership, we may shut cinemas included in your membership package temporarily for reasonable periods of time to carry out maintenance, repairs, refurbishment or cleaning, or for other reasons outside of our control. We will endeavour to reopen cinemas as soon as is reasonably possible in these circumstances;

10.3.2.  Permanent changes. During your membership, we may permanently close cinemas included in your membership package, and we may reduce their opening hours. We may also open new cinemas but not include them in the Limitless membership scheme.

10.5.   Ticket types excluded from all membership packages. Tickets for the following screenings are not included in any of our packages: ODEON Event Cinema screenings (music, theatre, sport etc.); special or private screenings (such as film festivals and premieres); and The Lounge screenings. Tickets which include food, drink and/or merchandise in the ticket price cannot be booked with your Limitless membership.

10.6.   Availability of films & formats. Whilst we generally screen most major film releases, we don’t guarantee to screen them all.  We generally programme a wide range of formats, but we may not show films in all available formats. Availability of films and film formats vary between cinemas, so any particular film and/or format may only be available at selected cinemas.

10.7.   Age restrictions on tickets.  Normal age restrictions apply to tickets booked with your membership card. You are not permitted to use your membership to book a ticket for a screening that you are too young to watch.

10.8.   No priority over our other guests. Tickets remain subject to availability. You will not be able to gain admission to a screening when the performance is sold out. Your membership does not give you priority over our other guests. Seating will be unreserved unless seat selection is offered to you during the booking process.

10.9.   Ticket booking is in cinema or via our website only.  You can book tickets using your Limitless membership via our website (by logging in as a member before you book) or at cinema (by showing your card).  You cannot book tickets with your Limitless membership via our apps, the mobile version of our website, or our ticket machines. Our website may sometimes be unavailable so we can carry out maintenance or for other reasons outside of our control. We will endeavour to make the website available again as soon as is reasonably possible in these circumstances.

10.10. Tickets booked via our website can be collected in cinema. Tickets booked via our website can be collected from the cinema box office by showing your membership card. Some cinemas also have ticket machines. You can collect your ticket from a ticket machine using your booking reference, or your membership card, or (if a payment has been made within the booking) the credit or debit card you used to make the payment.

10.11. Time limit for collecting your tickets. Ticket bookings not collected by the scheduled start time may be cancelled if there is high demand for the screening.

10.12. Limits on advance bookings.  You can use your membership to book tickets to see as many screenings as you like on the day you are booking. You can also book up to two tickets for screenings on subsequent days.  You can’t book tickets for screenings where the screening times overlap.  If you paid for your membership upfront you will not be able to book tickets for a date which is after the end of your paid-for minimum membership period.

10.13. 3D Glasses not included. 3D glasses are not included in your membership package, so you will need to bring or purchase your own 3D glasses where you have used your membership card to obtain a ticket to a 3D screening.  If your tickets are for a 3D film, and you have ordered 3D glasses, you will receive a voucher for your 3D glasses when you collect your tickets. You can take your 3D glasses voucher to any designated collection point in the cinema to collect your 3D glasses before the film.

10.14. Changes to scheduled screenings. We will always try to ensure that screenings take place in accordance with the advertised programme. However, we may sometimes have to cancel a performance, vary the time of a screening or substitute an alternative film because of circumstances beyond our control.  We will try and let you know beforehand if this happens.

11.    YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD

11.1.   You are responsible for your membership card. You must keep your membership card and membership details secure.  You must not share or allow anyone else to use your membership card or membership details.

11.2.   You must use your permanent membership card from when it arrives. You must stop using your temporary digital membership card as soon as your permanent card arrives.

11.3.   You need to show your membership card to access your membership benefits.  You must show your membership card in cinema every time you want to use your membership package.  You will need to present your card when booking tickets in cinema. You will need to present your card again with your ticket before entering the auditorium, so we can check that the person presenting the ticket is the member who booked the ticket.

11.4.   Checking your photo. Our staff will generally need to see your face so that they can verify your identity against your membership card photo. If this is an issue for you, please let us know, and we will work with you to find some other mutually acceptable method for proving your identity.

11.5.   Replacement membership cards.  You must tell us straightaway if your card is defective, lost or stolen, or you want to change the name on your card, by ringing the Limitless customer service number.  This is how it works:

11.5.1.  Defective cards (our fault). If your card is defective because of something we have done or not done, and you have provided reasonable evidence of the defect, we will provide a replacement card free of charge within a reasonable period of time from when you told us about the problem;

11.5.2.  Defective cards (your fault), lost or stolen cards, and name changes.  If you need a new card because of something you have done or not done, we will provide a replacement card, but we will levy a reasonable administration charge (currently £5) and you will need to pay the charge before we issue the replacement membership card. This includes where you have provided an inappropriate photo, in which case you will need to provide an appropriate photo before you get your new card.  This also includes where you have changed your name and want to change the name on your card.

12.      YOUR BEHAVIOUR IN CINEMA

12.1.   Why your behaviour matters.  Your behaviour in our cinemas can affect the safety and wellbeing of our staff and our other guests.  It can also affect the security of our property, and the property of our staff and guests. So we need to set some minimum standards of behaviour for members of Limitless.

12.2.   Things you must not do in cinema.  When you are in one of our cinemas you must not do or attempt to do any of the following:

a)         Behave in an aggressive, abusive, intimidating, anti-social or threatening manner, or behave in any way which may cause distress to our staff or other guests;

b)         Enter the cinema auditorium after the film has started if this will inconvenience other guests or present a risk to your own safety or the safety of other people in the auditorium;

c)         Use your phone, tablet or other portable devices whilst in the cinema auditorium;

d)         Bring cameras or recording equipment into the cinema auditorium;

e)         Take photographs or recordings in the cinema auditorium;

f)          Bring any animal into the cinema (other than guide or hearing dogs);

g)         Behave in an intoxicated manner;

h)         Smoke cigarettes or other substances;

i)          Engage in any type of criminal behaviour;

j)          Sleep in the cinema;

k)         Cause damage to the cinema, our property, or the property of our staff or our other guests;

l)          Misuse the vending machines;

m)        Force entry to locked doors;

n)         Stay in the cinema after closing time;

o)         Use any parking facilities provided in a way which breaches the rules of the cinema parking operator.

12.3.   CCTV. Please note that CCTV is in operation at our cinemas for the purposes of crime prevention and public safety.

12.4.   Film Piracy. It is an offence to make a recording of a film for sale or to distribute or communicate a recording to the public in the course of business and to the prejudice of the copyright owner. Anyone making such a recording may be arrested and prosecuted.

13.    TERMINATION OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP

13.1.   Your right to change your mind if you joined online. If you join online, you have a statutory right to cancel your membership within 14 days without giving any reason. If you want to do this, you must tell us within 14 days from the day you joined.  You should do this by calling us on the Limitless customer service number. Here’s how your right to change your mind works:

13.1.1.  Refund amount. We will refund the fees you have paid us minus a deduction which is based on the number of days your membership benefits were available to you before you cancelled. If you used your membership in an unreasonably excessive way before you cancelled, we reserve the right to make a further reasonable deduction to reflect the cost of that use;

13.1.2.  Method of refund. We will make any refund due to you not later than 14 days after the day you cancelled, using the same means of payment as you used to pay the fees.

13.2.   Your right to terminate your membership at the end of the minimum membership period. You can terminate your membership at any time after the end of your minimum period.  You should give us notice of termination by calling us on the Limitless customer service number.  Here’s how it works:

13.2.1.  Monthly payers. If you are paying monthly, you will need to give us notice of termination at least 30 days before you want your membership to end, so we have time to stop your direct debit. We will stop the collection of your next direct debit within 30 days of when you give us notice of termination, and your membership will end on the date you are paid up to;

13.2.2.  Upfront payers. If you have paid an upfront payment covering your minimum period, and you don’t have a monthly payment set up, you don’t need to do anything because your membership will terminate automatically at the end of your minimum period unless you have told us you want to join again.

13.3.   Your right to terminate your membership within the minimum membership period. We will allow you to terminate your membership within the minimum period, with a refund of any membership fees you have already paid in advance which relate to the period after the date of termination, in the circumstances listed below. You should call us on the Limitless customer service number if you want to terminate your membership in this way:

13.3.1.  Medical reasons. You are unable to use your membership for a continuing period of at least 8 weeks for medical reasons (we may ask you to provide reasonable proof of this);

13.3.2.  Change of residence reasons. You have changed your permanent address to an address outside the United Kingdom (we may ask you to provide reasonable proof of this);

13.3.3.  Our serious breach. We have breached these Terms in a serious way.

13.4.   Our rights to terminate or suspend your membership.  We can terminate or suspend your membership in the circumstances listed below:

13.4.1.  Your serious breach. If you have breached these Terms in a serious way, including a failure to pay your membership fees when due, we can terminate your membership by sending you written notice of termination.  We can also temporarily suspend your membership if you have failed to pay your membership fees when due;

13.4.2.  Obvious pricing errors. It is always possible that, despite our best efforts, there may be a pricing error in the joining process.  If we accept and process your request to join where a pricing error could reasonably have been recognised by you as a mispricing, we can terminate your membership and refund you any sums you have paid;

13.4.3.  Stopping providing your package.  If we stop providing your membership package, and you are outside your minimum membership period, we can terminate your membership. We will send you a written notice of termination to you at least 60 days before we terminate your membership in this way, and we will refund any membership fees you have paid in advance up to the date of the end of your membership.

13.5.   What happens when your membership terminates. When your membership is terminated, for whatever reason, your membership will end with immediate effect and we will deactivate your membership card. You don’t need to return your membership card to us. If you have a booking made with your Limitless membership where the screening date is after the date of termination, the entire booking will be automatically cancelled, and any paid-for elements of the booking (such as upgrade costs or non-member tickets) will be refunded to you.

13.6.   Closing Limitless. We can close the Limitless membership scheme on not less than 60 days’ notice by posting a notice online at ODEON.co.uk and notifying you in writing.  If we close Limitless in this way, your membership will terminate, even if you are still in your minimum membership period, and we will refund any membership fees you have paid in advance up to the date of the end of your membership.

13.7.   Closing or changing Limitless for new members. We can close Limitless to new members and/or stop selling individual membership packages at any time.

14.    CHANGES TO THESE TERMS AND/OR YOUR MEMBERSHIP PACKAGE

14.1.   Reasons we can make changes. We can amend these Terms and/or your membership package for the following reasons:

14.1.1.  Where our costs have changed, or we have a good reason to expect them to change soon. If this applies and we are making a change, we will change the Terms in a way that reasonably reflects the way our costs have changed;

14.1.2.  If we have to make a change to comply with a law or regulation that applies to us;

14.1.3.  Where the change makes the scheme or your package better for you, we are adding new features to the scheme or we are making these Terms fairer for you;

14.1.4.  To protect you or us from fraud or other harmful activity by third parties;

14.1.5.  If the way our systems work is changing and this means that we have a good reason to change the Terms to reflect this;

14.1.6.  If the way we run our cinemas is changing and it is fair that this leads to a change in the way that Limitless operates;

14.1.7.  Where we are correcting an obvious mistake in these Terms;

14.1.8.  To remove elements of the package if our members generally are not using it; and/or

14.1.9.  To keep any of our details up to date.

14.2.   Telling you about changes, and the impact on you. How we handle changes depends on the impact of the change on you. Here’s how it works:

14.2.1.  Where we are amending these Terms and/or your membership package, we will always post a notice of the amendments online at ODEON.co.uk.

14.2.2.  If the change has no real impact on you or the way the scheme or your membership package works (for example, we are changing our registered address) or the change clearly makes the scheme or your membership package better for you, then the change will take effect the day after it is posted online and we will not contact you separately.

14.2.3.  If paragraph 14.2.2 does not apply, then we will send you a written notice telling you about the change at least 60 days before the change comes into effect. If you are not happy with the change, you can terminate your Limitless membership by calling the Limitless customer service number, and we will give you a refund of any membership fees you have already paid in advance which relate to the period after the date of termination. If you do not do this before the change comes into effect, then we will assume that you have agreed to the change.

15.    OTHER IMPORTANT TERMS

15.1.   Our responsibility for foreseeable loss.  If we fail to comply with these Terms, or fail to use reasonable skill and care in providing Limitless to you, we are responsible for loss or damage that you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our failure. Foreseeable loss or damage can be foreseeable in two ways: either it is obvious that it will happen, or if at the time you joined you and we both knew it might happen.  We are not responsible for loss or damage which is not foreseeable.

15.2.   We may transfer this agreement to someone else. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to another organisation. We will always tell you in writing if this happens, and we will ensure that the transfer will not affect your rights under the contract.

15.3.   You need our consent to transfer your rights to someone else. You may only transfer your rights or your obligations under these Terms to another person if we agree to this in writing

15.4.   Nobody else has any rights under this contract. This contract is between you and us. No other person shall have any rights to enforce any of its terms.

15.5.   If a court finds part of this contract illegal, the rest will continue in force. Each of paragraph of these Terms operates separately. If any court or relevant authority decides that any of them are unlawful, the remaining paragraphs will remain in full force and effect.

15.6.   Even if we delay in enforcing this contract, we can still enforce it later. If we do not insist immediately that you do anything you are required to do under these Terms, or if we delay in taking steps against you in respect of your breaking this contract, that will not mean that you do not have to do those things and it will not prevent us taking steps against you at a later date. For example, if you miss a payment and we do not chase you but we continue to allow you to use your membership, we can still require you to make the payment at a later date.

15.7.   Which laws apply to this contract and where you may bring legal proceedings. These Terms are governed by English law and you can bring legal proceedings in respect of Limitless in the English courts. If you live in a part of the UK which is not England, you can choose whether to bring legal proceedings in respect of Limitless in the courts of the part of the UK where you live, or the English courts.

Alternative dispute resolution. Alternative dispute resolution is a process where an independent body considers the facts of a dispute and seeks to resolve it, without you having to go to court. If you are not happy with how we have handled any complaint, you may want to use alternative dispute resolution. The European Commission has established a website for online dispute resolution which is available at www.ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/, and which is designed to assist consumers in resolving disputes online without having to go to court
